CVCA President's Letter, Winter 2010

The CVCA has been working hard the last several months and we want to be sure community neighbors are aware of how to be involved in the activity. One way to stay informed is to sign up for the CVCA e-mail distribution.

CVCA Members and interested Charles Villagers receive important information and updates via this e-mail distribution. If you are a CVCA member and we have your e-mail address, you’re on it. If you haven’t given us your e-mail address – please do.

Right here on our website, you can sign up for the e-mail distribution, become a member, get updates on the Anderson Honda project & other activities, or purchase the Charles Village poster and cookbook, and look up other much needed resources.

charles village winter baltimoreThe record breaking snow fall occurred the weekend of the first annual Snowflake Tour of Charles Village homes thus forcing the cancellation of both the Snowflake Tour and the Village Learning Place’s International Holiday and Open House on Sunday January 20th. The homes and historic buildings were decorated beautifully and we look forward to 2010’s Snowflake Tour. A big thanks to Ron Tanner for spearheading the Snowflake Tour despite the ironic cancelation of the tour as a result of too many snowflakes.

Up next on the calendar is the 12th annual Spaghetti Disco February 27th. Go to the Village Learning Place to purchase tickets before the event sells out again this year. 2010 promises to be another year full of activity.

To that end – WE NEED YOUR HELP. The CVCA desperately needs more volunteers in the many areas of good neighborhood work. Please take a look at the committees list and reach out to the contact provided if you can help - we could sure use it and would love to have even more folks involved.

In general, the CVCA is looking for two types of volunteers: 1) Ad Hoc Volunteers & 2) Volunteers for activities & committee work. For the Ad Hoc Volunteers, the CVCA would like to have a list of people who are willing to help on an ad hoc basis so when there is call for help, we have a list of folks we can reach out to. If you would like to be included on this Volunteer listing, please send the CVCA an e-mail by using this response form:

snow play charles village baltimoreExamples of what you might be called for: volunteers to help sell cookbooks or posters at the Saturday Waverly Farmer’s Market or other events where neighbors gather; helping with a community funding raising yard sale; helping ‘man’ the public buildings (e.g. Seton House) on display at the next Snowflake Tour, etc.

To give folks an idea of how the CVCA advocates on behalf of the community, below are two examples: one specific to volunteer time and energy and one that is more flexible. 1. Land Use & Zoning Committee. This committee meets once a month at a set date/time/place to review issues related to zoning, liquor board, and housing code violations within the Charles Village boundary.

These committee members are charged with making recommendations t the CVCA Board of Directors. They :

1) attend City hearings & advocate on behalf of Charles Village,
2) review City and State legislation affecting land use (i.e. live entertainment, group homes, and comprehensive rezoning), and
3) meet with and discuss requests from applicants for changes in zoning (landlord requesting to convert a townhouse from 2 units to 3/4) or liquor licenses.

This committee is made up of a various volunteers from a cross section of the community bringing different and varied perspectives in order to fully represent Charles Village’s interests.

2. Holiday House Tour or Festival Committees. Both committees are centered around a specific event at a certain time/date. Volunteers can get as involved to whatever extent desired.

There is one of other item I’d like to reach out specifically to you as Charles Village neighbors. For many years Bonnie Bessor has been the primary point of contact for Charles Village North area Residential Parking Permit (“RPP”) for area 12/12a. For all her hard work and dedication –- especially this past year when the online City system had hiccups -- we give a big heartfelt thanks.

Bonnie is looking to transition out of the primary role as the RPP Area 12/12a liaison. Over the next year, and in a perfect world, she would like to transition this responsibility to 1 or 2 new liaisons. We are reaching out to the community to ask for help in finding her replacement Volunteer(s). Bonnie suggests 2 folks to share the responsibilities.

General responsibilities of this volunteer activity center around the one-time yearly activity in October for permit renewals but include:

1) Work with Parking Authority to set the date for annual community distribution
2) Work with other community leaders (AIAl, CVCA, etc) to announce annual community distribution
3) Communicate with individuals who have control over community distribution sites
4) Recruit and manage volunteers to assist withdistribution.
5) Respond to questions about RPP from community residents
6) Work with the Parking Authority to identify problems
7) Act as a contact person through the CVCA website
8) Participation in the RPP Advisory Committee

If you’re interested or know of someone who is interestedin helping with this great community service, please contact Bonnie at bbessor@gmail.com or at 410-467-5170 or me at cvcapresident@yahoo.com.

I invite you to become more involved in our wonderful Charles Village neighborhood –- a top 10 U.S. Neighborhood for 2009. We need your help & want to hear from you. Please feel free to contact me at CVCAPresident@yahoo.com.
